Diversity, dialogue and multiculturalism in America

A few years ago, I was doing coursework for a graduate degree in History and sitting in a class called “History of the American South.”

The course was a discussion format, and the topic was, “Define the American South.”

There were various arguments presented: geography, racial history, membership in the Confederacy, etc.

My answer was a little less cerebral and a  precursor of that recent Luke Bryan song that goes, “It ain’t a rebel flag you bought at the mall, it’s a hideaway bed in an old farm stall, two kids getting caught stealin’ a Boone’s farm kiss…”

Now, Luke Bryan is talking about what “country” is and I was talking about what the South is, but the principle is the same, yeah?

And, then, people in the class started talking about “people who grew up in the South.”

And I was, all, “I grew up in the South.”

And, then, they started laughing.

Florida, someone said, is not the South.

It might surprise you to know that I was madder than a pack of wild dogs on a three legged cat…

You can read this rest of this post here at Aiming Low.

See what I did there?  Oh, just click, it’s a good post for a good cause and it’s not like I’m asking you to join Amway or something.

Yeah, Florida is a little to far south to be considered “The South”, ifyaknowwhatimean. Too many snowbirds from up north anyhow.

  2. Alecia says:

I guess I never thought of Florida as the south either…but I am from the northwest so what do I know?

  3. Based on the Carl Hiassan novels I’m read, Florida is its own, peculiar country. Much like Texas.

I love Aiming Low, and I love your discovery of The South. I was in 6th grade when I moved to northeast Georgia, and learned that all soda is Cocola, and the word only has two syllables. Love your writing.
