Diversity, dialogue and multiculturalism in America

So, the Oscars were yesterday, huh?

I had no idea.  Seriously.

The last time I watched the Oscars was when Schindler’s List came out.  Was that 1993?  1994?

Maybe I’m a narcissist.  I’m bored by the prospect of watching someone I don’t personally know  win an award.  I’m also bored with the idea of talking about how well someone is dressed, why they are dressed that way and who dressed them.  Worst of all, I start to bore myself when I hear people talk about this topic because I’m all (in my head), “OHMYGOD-PEOPLE-ACROSS-THE-WORLD-ARE-FIGHTING-FOR-THEIR-LIVES-WHO-CARES-ABOUT-WARREN-BEATTY-WOW-REMEMBER-ISHTAR?”

Not that I’m implying that other people suffering should get in the way of our having a good time.  Life is fleeting and everyone has the right, maybe even duty, to forcefully pursue that which makes their heart light and their soul joyful.  While we can change the world by acknowledging and helping those in despair, we can also add to it’s beauty by embracing fun and excitement, too.

I completely get that.

Case in point, at this moment, I am having a very good time laughing about how horrible Ishtar was, and I’m sure someone is suffering right at this very moment as they suddenly realize that they just lost the last bit of integrity they had as a human being when they told Warren at an  after-party that it wasn’t such a bad film after all and what do critics and people with good taste in movies know anyway…

It’s just that, sometimes, I feel like me and everyone in America is at the senior prom or something.

Everyone around me is gushing, Oh, my goodness, who is going to be this year’s king and queen I hope she wins, I love her hair, I once sat next to her sister’s best friend’s cousin on the bus last year, he said she was super nice… plus, ugh, that other one?  I hate her, her teeth are too straight, only fake people smile like that…

And, well, just like I did almost twenty years ago, I’m thinking… they don’t even know you.  They don’t even live on the same planet as you, man.  Why do you love that one so much and why are you being so mean about that other one?

Of course if you watched, that’s totally cool.  The clothes, jewelry and Christian Bale are very pretty.  I like looking at pretty clothes, jewelry and Christian Bale.

So.  Yeah.  I get it.

Anything good happen?

Did the prom queen throw up in the parking lot afterward?

I’m not going to lie and tell you that wouldn’t be completely awesome.

I hate Christian Bale. I love Kevin Spacey a lot. James Franco was the most terrible host ever. I miss Billy Crystal and Steve Martin as hosts. Reece Witherspoon looked adorable. Natalie Portman, also adorable in all her pregnant glowiness. I still have A LOT of Oscar nominated movies to watch!

I didn’t watch either. I think I don’t have the attention span for awards shows.

Or, you know, that stuff about carrying about more important things like world struggles. It could totally be that, too.

I don’t watch awards shows. My husband had little tolerance for them and I hated all the plodding, manufactured drama and suspense. However, I DO love the fashions bits, so I will be anxiously awaiting my US Weekly issue in the mailbox and my People Magazine hand-me-down from my grandma.

I don’t really watch award shows. I’ll watch bits of the Grammys to catch a performance, but that’s about it. Mostly I just don’t care. I probably haven’t seen any of the movies nominated so I have no favorites and it’s hard to hold my attention if I’m not invested.

It was a pretty bad show, but I host a live blog for the thing every year on my blog and that was fun. James Franco and Anne Hathaway weren’t bad (and at times Franco was really funny), but most of the stuff they did fell flat.

I was just pissed that Bale beat out John Hawkes for Best Supporting Actor. I’m sure Bale was great, but that was a breakout performance in Winter’s Bone by Hawkes.

  7. the fact that the people who can most afford the clothing and the fancy jewels get it all for free or lent to them disturbs me. add to that the way most people say such awful things about how this one looked or what that one wore and it just hurts my heart to hear all that negativity. (why do some people feel so good when they tear others down?)

    i didn’t watch.

I never, ever watch – except I did, this year and last, so I could be in Earl’s chat room. I cry laughing at the stuff that goes on in that chat room, now.
Also, Gwyneth Paltrow sang. I cannot wrap my head around it. Or my ears. She should stick to acting. Mila Kunis had the best dress.
I was drinking so that’s the best I’ve got. :)

I used to watch, but C gets bored easily so I just normally don’t anymore. Last night I turned it on b/c she wasn’t here, and then I found I was bored too. I really do just like to watch them get out of the cars, and look all pretty!! I do think Christian Bale is yummy looking, but Anne Hathaway is just plain hawt!!! :)

I have to admit that I watch the Oscars almost every year. It’s the only awards show that I try not to miss. Half the time (this year included) it’s a train wreck but I guess it’s a bad habit I can’t break. This year, I followed some of my faves on twitter while watching and that made it more than enjoyable. It was a multi-media event!

Also, the prom queen was pregnant, so throwing up in the parking lot afterwards was an option, but not a very nice one..

I don’t watch tv very often and never have time to go to the movies so even if I had known it was time for the Oscars, I wouldn’t have watched.

I also forgot about the super bowl :)

I enjoy the Oscars because I enjoy movies and it’s nice seeing quality in any field be recognized. Sometimes the fashion parade is annoying, but I’d rather watch that than waste any mental faculties thinking about wars and poverty. That’s no fun!

Regardless of what movies are in the running, I’m a die hard Oscar nut each year. My favorite categories are Original and Adapted screenplay. For those two, when I have a favorite, I cheer them on.

I may have to turn in my card, but I didn’t know it was the Oscars either. Nor have I seen any of the nominated movies. That’s okay, we’re still cool.
