This is such a gift. I hope Tariq appreciated it that way.

And you are a phenomenal public speaker, my friend.

  2. Dave2 says:

Wonderful. I wish I was there to “WOOO!” in person with everybody else… but instead I’m WOOOing at my computer screen right now.

You should videotape yourself reading all your entries. :-)

  3. This was so moving, and eye-opening, too. Thanks for a different perspective on becoming a naturalized American. You are so right, we don’t think about what people give up to come here, and what’s given up when you decide to become the citizen of another country that you weren’t born in.

I’ll have you know, I paused The Stooges to watch.

I’ll have you know – it was totally worth it.
    :)

I don’t know why, but U can’t play the video in my android phone. Is it posted on YouTube? What’s the title & I’ll look it up…

I was hoping that this was going to be recorded and that you were going to show it here. Really, really well done. Proud of ya… :)

  7. Deborah says:

I remember!! You were and are amazing!

  8. SciFi Dad says:

    That was awesome.

(Also, totally aside: your manner of public speaking reminds me SO MUCH of my younger sister that it freaks me out. I’m going to get my wife to watch this and see if she concurs.)

  9. Liza says:

    that was beautiful

  10. Oh Faiqa – I remember that post! It’s how I feel every. single. time. I leave the liquor store. My heart is with Tariq. ;)
Seriously, you are wonderful and when are y’alls gonna be Canadians?

  11. Caroline says:

YOU were one of my favorite speakers at BlogHer. For reals. Your husband’s struggles with national identity and cultural loyalties – especially in a country clearly less willing to rally their whole “melting pot” thang right now – went right straight to my heart. You taught people that day, you know. And now I am SO proud to call you my friend.

So glad I was there to see you read this post in person!

  13. Lisa says:

Thank you for posting this. I loved your post when I first read it, but I love it even more having heard you present it.

  14. Al_Pal says:

SO moving, OMG. I am touched. This made me cry.
    Thank you.

(and now I’m wondering what prompted my grandma’s parents to move here…)

  15. Najlee says:

That was an amazing speech. Thank you so much for posting this! :)

My husband became a citizen more than a decade ago. And with your words I am reminded of what it was like for him. Thank you…
