Diversity, dialogue and multiculturalism in America

Dear Blog…

A long time ago, we used to be friends
But I haven’t thought of you lately at all
If ever again, a greeting I send to you,
Short and sweet to the soul is all I intend.

I’m obsessed with Veronica Mars.

I’m only on season three, but I can’t.stop.watching.  And it’s odd because I stopped watching it halfway through the first season for a while because I thought it was a lame version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, only without vampires, so, hi, why would I watch this?

Fall.  Or as it is known in more pretentious circles: Autumn.  It is without fail a time of seclusion for me.  This is the time of year where I subconsciously shed old stuff and make room for the new.  And laying around on the couch for a couple of hours is integral to my process.  As is an extremely patient husband.

Some people might think my watching Veronica Mars all weekend on the couch was some sort of indication that I might be a little depressed.   And, you know, some people might be right.

It’s not easy letting go of the old way of doing things.  No matter how inefficient or harmful the old way of doing things might be, it is the way that you’ve always done things.  Even if you replace the old with the newer and better… it’s going to be difficult.

And that’s going to make you sad.  At least, it makes me sad.  It makes me sad like… like cleaning a toilet makes me sad.  But an actual clean toilet, that makes me happy.

I’m currently working on releasing the frustration I feel for cleaning the toilet and replacing it with the fulfillment brought on by looking at a shiny, clean toilet… or, more specifically, having my mother over and the toilet being shiny and clean when she visits the restroom.

Hey.  What’s that sound?  Ohhh, THAT’S what 100 people unsubscribing from your blog in a split second sound like.

Still, it’s not depressed in the, “I’m so sad” way or even the “I don’t care about anything” way.  I’m just one of those people that needs time to shut down for a while, so I can remember why I do the things I do.  To redefine meaning and to reassess direction.  I am blessed cursed blessed just one of those people who have to know why they’re doing what they’re doing and that must have a good reason to continue doing it.

Anyway.  Veronica Mars helped me this weekend by making me feel like I was doing something besides living in my head.  You know, because Veronica, Wallace and me are  fighting crime together and I’m telling Veronica that I am Team Logan all the way… for now.

((Also, is there some subtext that I’m missing with all the Roman gods names being used in the series?  Neptune, Pan, Mars?  Or is that just tongue in cheek humor?  We’re not going to find out that every single child at Neptune High was really the illegitimate child of a Roman god, are we?))

((Because I read that book and I didn’t like it nearly enough to see the movie, let alone a whole TV series.))

P.S. All of my posts (previous ones as well) now have the “Like” button for Facebook users at the end.  Feel free to go back through the archives and “Like” away.

P.P.S.  As a favor to me, please do not like this one.  I’m slightly appalled that my first introduction to someone new might be when I quote the Veronica Mars theme song on my blog.

One of my most favorite shows ever. The genius that is Veronica Mars cannot be denied!

  2. Poppy says:

I LOVED Veronica Mars and watched it exactly how you did — weekend on the couch. Depressed or not, I really think this is the best way to watch that series.

I have a history of depression, it’s ingrained in my programming, so whenever someone tells me they’re depressed it just makes me feel like you’re a kindred spirit.

But I am bummed that you didn’t do the posts answering our questions yet, because I am selfish and want recipes.

How did the French exam go? Did you have it yet??

  3. Kim says:

I don’t like that show, but I really really really like you. : ) and I totally get it. Xoxo

  4. Rachel says:

I love VM so much it hurts. (See my most recent tweet @solandrachel.) I really want to be her BFF. Really bad. (PS. This is my first introduction to you, a friend emailed me your post because of my undying love for this show. Quoting the theme song is a good way to start.)

    • Faiqa says:

@Rachel, Ha! I wish she were my BFF.. no, actually, I love her way more than that and past the point of being healthy… like, I want to steal locks of her hair and wear them around my neck…

  5. Lisa says:

I’ve never watched Veronica Mars but now you’ve inspired me. Thanks for the recommendation!

I totally get what you mean. I feel the need to hide in my cave on a regular basis. I spent this weekend sleeping way more than usual so there must be a little re-evaluating going on there too. I usually can’t sleep like that.

  6. Robin says:

    Um…what’s Veronica Mars?

    ::dodges flying objects::

  7. B.E. Earl says:

Veronica Mars is one of those shows that I’ve always wanted to watch, but it just hasn’t happened yet. I’ve only heard great things about it from people who know, so I wouldn’t feel too bad about quoting it’s theme song. You are a female, right? Isn’t that what females do? ;)

Anyway, I see it’s now on Netflix Instant. So I may be doing some couch sitting in the near future as well. Well, more than normal…which is already a lot. Ugh…now I’m depressed.

    • Faiqa says:

@B.E. Earl, The only reason I started watching it was because it was on the Instant Queue. Guess what I haven’t seen that is also on there? Firefly. I KNOW. That’s next.

      • B.E. Earl says:

@Faiqa, WHAT? Wait…have you seen Serenity yet? Please tell me you are going to watch Firefly BEFORE Serenity. It’s only 14 episodes.

I know you love Angel…me too. But I think Firefly/Serenity might be the best thing Joss Whedon has ever done. Right up there with Buffy. It’s definitely the best group of actors he has ever had. Not a clunker in the bunch.

        Go. No. WATCH!!!

        • Faiqa says:

@B.E. Earl, I did see Serenity.. and now you have me feeling all ashamed about it.

          • B.E. Earl says:

@Faiqa, Sorry…that wasn’t my intent. But you probably weren’t as emotionally attached to the characters there at the end as you would have been if you had watched the series.

Watch Serenity again after you watch Firefly. Let me know if you like it even more. (I’m assuming you enjoyed Serenity here)

  8. Loukia says:

I’ve recently discovered that although I love and watch a lot of TV, I’m missing out on some great shows! Also, living in Canada, I get SAD from about September 1st to April 30th, which means I too sit on the couch a lot. ;)

    • Faiqa says:

@Loukia, Mommy’s need to sit on the couch and just chill. I actually was diagnosed with SAD about three years ago, and tried medication, but it just didn’t work. My solution is to just accept that this time of year is going to be slow for me and I’ll get to catch up on all the television I missed in the past year. :-)

  9. Sybil Law says:

Fall is always when I go into more of a hermit mode, in general. Something about eh cool air sends me into nesting mode, too, so I start cooking more and baking and then I gain weight (which I could care less about). Because I spend more time indoors, it’s easy to feel lazy and sorta depressed, but I think, like you, that it’s necessary to look back on things and kinda recharge. I mean, hell – the holidays are right around the frigging corner! Gotta recharge for all the holiday crap!
    Now THAT makes *me* depressed.

    • Faiqa says:

@Sybil Law, I realized this year that for the past five years (when this stuff actually started) that it usually happens right after Ramadan for me. I think, for me, it’s a POST holiday thing, you know? But, yeah, holidays have a real weird effect on mood, often ones we don’t expect.

  10. Avitable says:

Man. Maybe you should start up with the cancer sticks again.
    :) xo

  11. SciFi Dad says:

You clean the toilet because otherwise it gets really gross and disgusting. That’s why.

  12. Miss Britt says:

I just started watching Veronica Mars last night!

I’m now 9 episodes into the first season.

  13. hpflo says:

Sounds like you are having ‘ME TIME’….and that however spent is well-worth it! ;)

  14. cagey says:

LOVE Veronica Mars. The 2nd season got a little dodgy, but it was worth it. If you like the theme song, I really recommend the soundtrack.

    Thanks for the earworm!

    • Faiqa says:

@cagey, Heh, you mean, you *didn’t* like the episode in the 2nd season where she woke up like nothing had ever happened… or where she talked to dead people? That was the *most* Buffy-esque portion of the series so far, and may have actually been what hooked me!

  15. J from Ireland says:

We would only ever use the word “Fall” for Autumn if we were taking the piss and you called it pretentious, thats funny!
I read that book too and couldn’t be arsed to see the movie either. Not sure I’d be too into Veronica Mars though.

  16. Clown says:

Veronica Mars was absolutely top notch TV. After this long, what was it that got you to give it another chance?

    • Faiqa says:

@Clown, Did Adam put you up to this? Sigh. Fine. Adam recommended that I watch the show. And I listened to him. And he was RIGHT. HAPPY NOW?

      • Clown says:

@Faiqa, Ha, nope, I wasn’t aware it was him. He’s actually the one that convinced a very reluctant me to watch it. He tried for the entire first season but I didn’t give in until a month before the 2nd.

I just thought you either might have heard something about the movie, came across it on netflix streaming, or something else.

But with a hat and sunglasses like he has, I wouldn’t expect most people to take his recommendations seriously.

  17. gisela says:

Here in Canada we use either autumn or fall. Never thought it would result in us to be called pretentious. Actually, “fall” is awkward, as in “fall leaves fall”. “Autumn leaves fall” sounds better.

    • Faiqa says:

@gisela, Oh, dear. I seem to be causing an international incident here… I live in the Southern United States… it’s pretentious when someone HERE says Autumn… that’s what I meant.
